Alkyd Resins

Alkyd Resins

These alkyd resins are made here at my studio. They are carefully tested before being used. Alkyd resins help to toughen up oil paints and help the paint shine. They smooth out brush strokes and also reduce yellowing. My alkyd resins do not contain any volatile organic compounds such as turpentine, stoddard solvents or naphtha derivatives. They are pure alkyd resin only. They are about as thick as stand oil and can be diluted in any solvents if you wish. They dry slowly, simlar to stand oil and are meant to be mixed with paint at up 25% of the binder content. With a minimal amount of driers added they dry quickly but in most paints they dry well without any added driers. Alkyds are a strange resin, too much drier and they wrinkle badly so they tend to be very touchy. Always try to use them without driers and solvents first. They always dry eventually, even in the worst paint. My alkyds are based on pure refined linseed oil, propylene glycol and fumaric acid, none of which are toxic. Due to the esterification process they smell like rum!
